The journey to becoming a founder is often marked by pivotal moments and transformative experiences. For me, it all began with a simple yet profound question that arose during my time as a limited English-speaking guide in Luang Prabang: "I want to go to school, how can I do this?" This question was posed to numerous visitors, and little did I know that the generosity of one couple in mid-2006 would change the course of my life forever. They responded, "We would like to send you to school."
In late 2006, I found myself stepping through the doors of the Lao-American College in Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR. That moment marked the beginning of a seven-year educational journey. By 2013, with a Bachelor of Business Management in hand, I returned to the rural beauty of Luang Prabang to fulfill a lifelong dream: teaching English to children in my small village.
Throughout this entire process, I had a vision—a dream that one day, a Hmong person would establish a school where children could learn and grow. If that school didn’t exist, I was determined to make it a reality myself.
The Birth of a Vision
On November 1, 2013, the vision for what would become the Kailor Education Development Center was born. Yet, creating this educational haven was not without its challenges. Resource limitations loomed large over my aspirations. However, fortune smiled upon me when my father-in-law, an honorable 88-year-old former soldier who valiantly served during the Vietnam War, generously donated a 7,000 square meter plot of land in Xieng Khouang for the learning center.

This region, though many struggle with poverty, is seeing gradual growth and increasingly attracting tourists thanks to its proximity to the famed Plain of Jars World Heritage Site.
Starting from scratch was both daunting and exhilarating; I quickly learned that perseverance is essential. I took on the monumental task of constructing the learning center and acquiring essential furniture and equipment. The logistics of obtaining tables, chairs, a whiteboard, computers, projectors, an LCD/DVD player, a printer, and a copy machine were challenging yet fulfilling.
Building the Infrastructure
Completing the construction of the Kailor Education Development Center was one of the proudest achievements of my journey. I envisioned a space that wasn’t merely a classroom but a sanctuary of learning and hope for children in my community.
With the building complete, I finally witnessed a dream take physical form into a vibrant Learning Center. The center stands there today as a testament to the belief that education can thrive even from the most modest beginnings.

As the doors of the center swung open, it was as if I was welcoming a world of possibility for the children of my village. This space is not just about classrooms and educational tools; it embodies aspiration, community, and the undeniable power of education to transform lives.
The Core Belief
At the heart of my mission is a fundamental belief: a day will come when every child has access to quality education. The Kailor Education Development Center aims to be a part of making this vision a reality.
Through quality English language instruction, we are not only teaching children a foreign language but are also opening doors to future opportunities. Quality education acts as the foundation upon which young minds can build their dreams.
As I reflect on the journey thus far, I am deeply grateful for the guiding principles that have fueled the Kailor Education Development Center. My personal experiences as a limited English-speaking guide shaped my understanding of the barriers many children face in accessing education. I hope to bridge that gap through our programs.
Encouragement for Aspiring Founders
For those considering a similar journey—establishing educational institutions or community centers—there are several key takeaways to consider:
Start with a Vision: Understand what you are passionate about and the impact you wish to make. Your vision will be your guiding light during challenging times.
Embrace Challenges as Opportunities: Building something from the ground up comes with its share of hurdles. View challenges as opportunities for growth and learning.
Build a Support System: Surround yourself with people who believe in your mission. This network of supporters can provide invaluable resources and encouragement.
Impact Through Education: Education is one of the most powerful tools for change. Whether it's a school or a small learning center, make it your mission to equip children for success.
Be Patient and Persistent: Change takes time, and it's essential to remain committed to your goals even when the going gets tough.
Conclusion
My journey from a humble guide in Luang Prabang to the founder of the Kailor Education Development Center has profoundly changed my life and the lives of countless children in my community. Each step has been fueled by a desire to create a brighter future through quality education.
